Separate the build from running costs

A website quote should distinguish the initial work from the cost of keeping the site available and useful. Design, development, content setup and launch checks belong to the build. Domain renewal, hosting, subscriptions and ongoing support need their own lines. A low initial figure is hard to compare if these items are left out.

Ask whether the quote is in PKR, which recurring charges are billed in another currency, who pays the provider and when renewals happen. Request the current provider price instead of assuming a fixed exchange rate or renewal discount.

Choose a scope before choosing a price

• Service website: a homepage, service information, selected work and an enquiry route.
• Editable content site: reusable layouts plus a workflow for the person updating pages.
• Online store: product data, collections, order settings and the customer purchase journey.
• Business portal: user roles, records, integrations and operational testing.

What changes the development quote?

Custom layouts, incomplete product data, multiple user roles and third-party integrations each introduce different work. The same is true of migrating an existing site: redirects, content cleanup and checking old links should be discussed before the quote. Decide who supplies text, photography and brand assets, and how many review rounds are included.

For an editable site, review WordPress development. For products and orders, compare Shopify development. A platform choice should follow the editing and selling workflow.

A brief you can send to a developer

1. Describe your business and the action visitors should take.
2. List the pages or representative product types.
3. Share your current URL, available content and two useful references.
4. Explain integrations, account roles and who will edit the site.
5. Give your target launch window and budget constraint.

Ask for an itemised response covering deliverables, exclusions, milestones and support. For a contact-led site, acceptance checks can include a usable mobile menu, a working enquiry route and readable service pages. For a store or portal, add representative order and user journeys.

Keep recurring costs visible

Shopify lists its own platform subscriptions separately from custom development. Check the current Shopify pricing and confirm the services available to your business. For self-hosted WordPress, ask the host to meet the official requirements, and agree responsibility for updates and backups.
